Hello and welcome to Mrs. Barber's website! I began teaching at Haverford Middle School during the 2013-2014 school year and was thrilled to start up the Family & Consumer Science program. Using parent and student input, I worked to create what I believe is a fun, educational, and really useful course for the 8th graders at HMS.
I began my career in education through an undergraduate program at The College of William & Mary and continued with a graduate program at the University of Pennsylvania. My original intent was to become a guidance counselor so that I could positively influence young adults and effect change in their lives. After several years as a guidance counselor, I realized my passion for teaching and returned to school to simultaneously get certified to teach special education and FACS.
The reason I chose to pursue FACS is because the areas covered by this certification (cooking, nutrition, childcare, sewing, etc…) have always been a passion of mine. I love to cook, eat well, learn about nutrition, and care for children...especially my own four kids! It is my hope to instill a love of these practical life skills into my students during our time together. If you have any suggestions for the course, I always appreciate getting input and feedback from parents and students!
