KINDERGARTEN SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) OBJECTIVES

UNIT 1  SELF-AWARENESS: Know your feelings, strengths, and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.” 

LESSON 1  To become familiar with the SEL curriculum, rules, and the counselor’s role

LESSON 2 To learn the importance of rules and manners in a classroom setting

LESSON 3  To develop a positive self-esteem

LESSON 4  To develop a sense of one’s strengths and talents

LESSON 5  To identify values, attitudes, and beliefs 

LESSON 6   To identify and effectively communicate feelings

LESSON 7 To learn strategies to cope with feeling frustrated (Growth Mindset)

LESSON 35 To practice stress management techniques (breathing techniques, guided imagery, fidgets, stretch bands, play-dough, virtual calming kits & movement breaks)

FIRST GRADE SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) OBJECTIVES

UNIT 1  SELF-AWARENESS: Know your feelings, strengths, and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.” 

LESSON 1  To become familiar with the SEL curriculum, counselor, rules, and the counselor’s role

LESSON 2   To keep practicing new tasks, cope effectively with frustration, and have a   growth mindset

LESSON 3  To recognize the importance of expressing feelings

LESSON 4  To learn strategies to cope with feeling afraid

LESSON 5  To learn strategies for handling anger

UNIT 2 SOCIAL AWARENESS: Understand the perspectives of others and empathize with them, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

LESSON 6  To develop skills for making friends

LESSON 7  To recognize behaviors that support or hurt friendships, and to express   feelings  sensitively

LESSON 8  To cope with rejection from peers

LESSON 9  To accept individual differences in others

LESSON 10       To accept differences in families

LESSON 11       To have the courage to be yourself and accept others (GET lesson)

LESSON 13 To develop perseverance and good sportsmanship in games

SECOND GRADE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) OBJECTIVES 

UNIT 1 SOCIAL AWARENESS: Understand the perspectives of others and empathize with them, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

LESSON 1  To have the courage to be oneself 

LESSON 2  To recognize that each person is equally important

LESSON 3   To include others and develop strategies for coping with being left out

LESSON 4 To accept differences in others

UNIT 2 SELF-AWARENESS: Know your feelings, strengths, and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.” 

LESSON 5   To use positive self-talk to build self-esteem

LESSON 6   To use positive self-talk to cope with mistakes

LESSON 7        To identify positive ways to cope with anger

LESSON 8    To  apply the concept of a growth mindset to personal challenges and limitations

UNIT 3 RELATIONSHIP SKILLS: Communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with others, resist inappropriate social pressure, negotiate conflict constructively, and seek and offer help when needed.

LESSON 9 To see one’s part in escalating or de-escalating conflicts

LESSON 10      To understand the harmful effects of teasing and bullying and to develop strategies to respond with teasing and bullying

LESSON 11    To understand bullying and develop and practice strategies for responding to bullying; to see the responsibility of bystanders/become an upstander
