What Do Kids Learn in Guidance?

The elementary school counselors teach a social-emotional learning curriculum on a biweekly basis to all students in grades one through five, and as scheduled for kindergarten. The curriculum is child-centered and focused on the five interrelated sets of cognitive, affective, and behavior competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.  The curriculum encourages students to develop positive self-images, develop healthy relationships with others, and learn effective problem-solving skills. Lessons make extensive use of stories, discussion, and role-playing and focuses on feelings, communication and problem solving.
