Student Care of Chrome Devices

Chrome Devices

For the 2023 school year the District will continue to provide Chrome devices for all students in grades K through 12. Chromebooks for students in kindergarten through 2nd grade will remain in the classroom. Students in grades 2-12 will use an HP Chromebook. Students in grades K-1 will utilize an HP touchscreen chromebook.

Students and parents are responsible for district-owned technology property that is issued to them, just as they are for other district-owned items such as textbooks, calculators, cameras, athletics equipment or library books.

Students are responsible for the general care of the Chrome device they have been issued by the school.

Chrome devices that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to the Technology Department as soon as possible so that they can be taken care of properly. District owned Chrome devices should never be taken to an outside computer service for any type of repairs or maintenance. Students should never leave their Chrome device unattended except locked in their hallway locker.

General Precautions

  • No food or drink should be next to Chromebooks
  • Cords, cables, and removable storage devices must be inserted carefully into Chromebooks
  • Chromebooks should not be used with the power cord plugged in when the cord may be a tripping hazard.
  • Chromebooks must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, and labels.
  • Heavy objects should never be placed on top of Chromebooks

Carrying Chromebooks

  • Always transport Chrome devices with care.
  • Never lift a Chromebook by the screen.
  • Never carry a Chromebook with the screen open.

Screen Care

  • The screen of a Chrome device can be damaged if subjected to heavy objects, rough treatment, some cleaning solvents, and other liquids. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure.
  • Do not put pressure on the top of a Chrome device when it is closed.
  • Do not store a Chromebook with the screen open.
  • Do not place anything in the protective case that will press against the screen or casing.
  • Make sure there is nothing on the keyboard before closing the lid of a Chromebook (e.g. pens, pencils, or disks)
  • Only clean the screen with a soft, dry microfiber cloth or anti-static cloth.
  • All Chrome devices will be labeled with a District tag and should remain at all times
  • Tags may not be modified or tampered with in any way.

Tips to Make Your Battery Last

Lower your screen brightness

  • You can adjust it to a comfortable setting that uses less power.
  • Lowering the brightness to about half will increase your battery life substantially

Standby Mode

  • When you are not using your Chromebook, put it in standby mode by closing the lid
  • Your websites and other work will still be there when you return, but the screen will turn off and power use will be greatly reduced
  • Upon opening, simply enter your password to jump right back into action!

Shutting Down

  • This will save even more battery than standby because it minimizes battery drain to almost nothing.
  • It also only adds about 5 seconds to your log in time so why not?

Closing Programs

  • Close out of apps you are not using, it will also make your Chromebook run faster and save power!
  • The more apps you have open, the more power is needed to sustain them, so close them out if you don’t immediately need them
  • This is especially true for online games, YouTube and Netflix.

Lowering Volume

  • This isn’t the largest culprit of battery drain, but it does contribute to it
  • Whether you are using the speakers or headphones, keeping the volume down will reduce power output!

USB

  • Do not leave unneeded USB devices plugged in your Chromebook that you are not using. They draw power!

Heat

  • Do not leave your Chromebook at extreme high or low temperatures for a long period of time.
  • Also do not leave it in direct sunlight.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: Charge your Chromebook EVERY NIGHT!

  • The best way to make it through the day, is to start  it with a full battery!
