Hello and welcome to Mrs. Barber's website! I began teaching at Haverford Middle School (HMS) during the 2013-2014 school year and was thrilled to start up the Family & Consumer Science (FCS) program. Using parent and student input, I worked to create what I believe is a fun and educational course for the 8th graders at HMS. I always appreciate getting input and feedback from my parents and students as we continue to shape the future of this course together.
The 2016-2017 school year marks the beginning of my twelth year in the education profession. I began my career in education through a graduate program in educational counseling at the University of Pennsylvania. My original intent was to become a guidance counselor so that I could positively influence young adults and effect change in their lives. After nearly two years as a professional counselor for a New Jersey school district and two more years as a guidance counselor at alternative and charter schools, I realized that counselors don’t spend nearly as much time with students as do their teachers. I returned to graduate school and simultaneously got certified to teach special education and FCS.The reason I chose to pursue FCS is because the areas covered by this certification (cooking, nutrition, sewing, money management, childcare, etc…) have always been a passion of mine. I love to cook, eat well, learn about nutrition, sew, plan and manage a budget, and care for children. It is my hope to instill a love of these life skills into my students during our time together!
