    Course Title: Technology Education A Computer Programming and Robotics Approach
    Instructor: Ms. Jessica Ramos
    Time Period: 9 weeks, M-F, 48 min
    Location: Tech Ed Lab 034, Haverford Middle School

    Scratch: A Visually Based Product for Learning Computer Programming (approx. 22 days)
    Using the gaming and visual presentation builder software called Scratch developed by The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, students will get their first taste of programming in this user friendly environment that is as robust as nearly any graphic software on the commercial market today and yet teaches programing at the same time.

    Unit 1: Approx. 11 days
    • 10 Tutorials from the scratch web site
    • Game development …the Witch and Key Game:
    • Final application of the tutorials will culminate into a complete game with points and lives that will draw on all prior skills from 10 basic tutorials with some new skills and tools added in to complete an arcade ready game.
    Unit 2: Approx. 11 days
    • A final project of personal choice
    • A game of choice (see the detailed rubric shared doc)
    • A visual presentation (see the detailed rubric shared doc)

    Lego Mindstorms: Robotics 101 (approx. 22 days)
    We will be using award winning Lego Robotics Mindstorms EV3 as a foundation for our intro to the systems and concepts that surround the field of robotics and autonomous task objectives.

    Unit 1: Approx. 8 days
    • Online STEMcentric Lego Robotics Tutorials for the EV3
    • 8 tutorials that introduces the learner to the graphical interface and to the essentials to the motor controls and sensors controls.
    Unit 2: Approx. 14 days
    • Task 1: Moving the robot based on distances and angled turns
      • The parking project
    • Task 2: Moving the robot based on sensors
      • Navigate the playing field with the robot reacting to the perimeter boards and colored tape using all the robots sensors as it relates to the task description. (Task descriptions are subject to change)
    • Final Task
      • Moving Ping-Pong balls while navigating with distances and sensors as it relates to the task description. (Task descriptions are subject to change)
    Classroom Policies
    • Get to your seat as soon as you enter the room.
    • The bell signals the beginning of class.
    • No personal electronic devices in class.
    • No food, drinks, or gum.
    • Respect your fellow students, teacher and the district property.
    • Be on time and ready to work.
    • Follow directions.
    Restroom and leaving the room procedures:
    • Unless it’s an emergency, bathroom use is prohibited for the first 10 minutes of class.
    • Use the restroom before school or during lunch.
    • If you must ask during class, please wait until independent work time, not when the teacher is lecturing.
    • Only one student at a time.
    • The last 2-5 min of class is clean up and push chairs in at the bell.
    • No one stands at the door for the bell ...remain in your seats till the bell.
