Find a rock and use it to tell an imaginative story through art

This project is based on the story, “Everybody Needs A Rock”. If you like, you can see and listen to this book by clicking here Everybody Needs A Rock (YouTube).

You’ll need a rock, paper, and a pencil or crayons, or whatever you have to draw with.

·       Find a special rock that fits in the palm of your hand that you can carry around in your pocket.

·       Listen to your rock, ask questions about its journey and history:

      • Where did it come from?
      • What story does a rock tell?

·       Create a drawing about your rock and the story that it tells.

As always, I would love to see your work. You can send me a photo at:

Extension One:

If you enjoyed this activity using materials from nature, watch Not A Stick (YouTube), find a nice not-a-stick, and create a work of art about it.

Extension Two:

You can decorate your rock using paint or markers. You could try gluing a picture to your rock, or maybe you have an idea of your own to try.

I’ve been decorating rocks by gluing beads, bits of shell, old jewelry and anything else I can find here at home, to them. Here’s a photo of some of my work.
