- Family Celebration Night – That’s tonight!
- All families have something to share! Create a display that tells your story and/or educates us about the food, hobbies, culture, rituals, celebrations, and/or activities your family enjoys.
- Doors will open at 5:30 for set-up, and our gallery walk and sharing expo will begin at 6:00 PM and end at 7:00 PM.
- Reading Olympics
- Event date for 4th and 5th grade students in Reading Olympics
- Date: Monday, April 1st, 2019.
- Location: Northley Middle School (Penn Delco School District), 2801 Concord Rd., Aston, PA 19014
- Time: We will all meet there at 5:20 PM, seated in the gym. Doors open at 5:00 pm.
- Arriving early. Parking will be a challenge. Carpooling is recommended.
- STEAM Programming - Ecology experts to visit Chestnutwold on April 16, 2019
- Experts will present information about their field to our students. They will share their experiences working in ecology, relating their discussion to the grade level questions students have been investigating this year in our STEAM programming.
- Students will then collaborate with our guests to modify the solutions they have completed to this point. Our experts will examine student work. They will provide feedback on their process. Experts will ask our students questions with the intent to stimulate student thinking about their curiosities, research, planning, design, and testing, as they related to their ecology problem.
- Ask your child about their work in these activities.
- Have them explain their PBL essential problem and the process they are following to resolve it.
- Fifth grade will visit and work with Haverford College students and faculty on April 16th to investigate their problem: Greenhouses and assorted forms of farming.
- Spring Break
- Spring Break begins at the close of school on Tuesday, April 16th.
- Schools are closed Wednesday, (4/17), Thursday, (4/18), Friday, (4/18), and Monday, (4/22).
- School resumes a regular schedule on Tuesday, April 23rd.
- Communications survey
- Reminder to families that we are in the process of conducting a survey about communications in the District. Parents/Guardians can find a link to the survey (available in a variety of languages) on our district website.
- The survey will remain open until April 9th.
- The PSSA for students in grades three through five is scheduled for the following days:
- ELA: Wed., 4/24, Thurs., 4/25, and Fri. 4/26
- MA: Mon., 4/28, and Tues., 4/29
- SCI (G4 only): Thurs., 5/2, and Fri., 5/3
- Students will make-up sections of the PSSA they missed due to an absence.

- Chestntuwold Fifth Grade Earns Top Honors
· 5thGrade Teams representing Chestnutwold Elementary School competed in the recent WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. The 5thgrade team scored an impressive 196 points out of a possible 200 in the second of three meets this year.
· Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the WordMasters Challenge™,5th graders Maxwell, Owen, Lucas, Clementine, Maeve, and Dylan. achieved an outstanding individual score of 20 out of a possible 20 on the challenge. 5th Graders Cami, Greta, Lucy, Ben, Hazel, and Adeline scored a fantastic score of 19 out of 20. The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™by Ms. Doeller and Mrs. Oelkers.

- Recycle your dried markers and crayon “stubs.”
- The Chestnutwold Delegation, in conjunction with Roots and Shoots, have placed marker/crayon collection boxes in each classroom. Send us your dried markers and crayon “stubs” for recycling.
- Our recycling collection started in January and will end in May.
- All collected markers will be sent to be recycled and used to make plastic goods and new crayons for children’s hospitals.

The goal is to turn unsafe, unexpected, and/or deconstructive behaviors into learning opportunities as to educate our students in Social Emotional Development so future interactions promote academic and affective growth. Our faculty facilitates a process where our students confront their choices and their emotions to develop a plan for restoring the environment. Students, under the guidance our school/district faculty, work collaboratively to identify actions they can take for the “next time” and/or identify resources that will help resolve the problem and restore the environment.
Students and adults will:
(1) Engage in safe interactions
(2) Act with self-regulation and equanimity
(3) Behave with empathy for others
(4) Act to restore the environment that was disrupted
Students, teachers, and faculty will work in collaboration to learn and become life-long productive members of a community.

Our school community is a safe learning environment for each student. The school community environment is built on trusting relationships, high and consistent expectations, persistence and accountability. We devote large amounts of time developing our environment through community practices, interactions, curricula, celebrations, expectations and meaningful classroom tasks. Each school community member is expected to reinforce or model these practices and principles in their daily activities at school.
The Chestnutwold Behavior Plan (CBP) is about restoring the environment and learning how to maintain a dignified environment. This multilayered approach borrows its fundamental practices from several proven ideas: Choice Theory, 2) Collaborative Problem Solving, 3) Responsive Classroom and 4) 1-2-3 Magic.
A point system is used to track student performance. A student who earns 15 points in one trimester jeopardizes his or her participation in extra-curricular activity(examples not limited to: grade level celebrations, school assemblies and/or classroom activity). The student, family and school communicate about a student’s behavior and points.
Aligned to the 11 Principles of Effective Character Education issued by the Character Education Partnership ®, the Character Counts ® program, and findings from multiple sources, our six Chestnutwold Character Kid Traits (ChCK Traits)are: Responsibility, Respect, Empathy, Trustworthiness, Positive attitude, and Integrity.
