All students graduating from Haverford High School should be able to demonstrate life management skills by setting goals and priorities in their personal lives and by implementing a plan for physical and mental health. The following courses were designed to meet these life-long goals.
Grade 9: The ninth grade curriculum will help students meet life-long health goals. Along with a thorough curriculum of physical activities, students study a health education component consisting of the following topics: Mental Health, AIDS, Family Living and Sex Education, and Drug Education.
Grade 10: All sophomores are required to take Health and Physical Education. Students will participate in co-ed physical education two days a week and health education three days a week. In health class, students will demonstrate through written and practical hands-on assignments knowledge of treatments for the ill and injured. Although not required, students can receive a certification card from the American Red Cross for a $10 fee. Students may choose to borrow a book and not become certified. Successful completion of this course allows students to receive dual certification or recertification in First Aid, rescue breathing, and CPR and community CPR (adult, child and baby).
Grades 11 & 12: Students have a host of course options that will allow them to enhance their physical well-being. In some courses physical activities will be seasonal, both indoors and outdoors, and provide opportunities to take part in variety of individual, dual, and team sports. Classroom work is designated as a wellness lab. In other courses, students design a program of fitness and aerobic exercise to develop their fitness now and one that can be incorporated into their life-long wellness behaviors. Exercise will focus on toning, strengthening and conditioning the entire body. Five elements of fitness will be emphasized: Cardiovascular and Endurance, Muscular Endurance, Lean Body Mass, Muscular Strength, and Flexibility.
