Long-Time Adviser to Fordian Gets Ready to Step Down
Gerri Fish has been advising Fordian staff members for about 22 years –
that’s well over 100 student newspapers that have been published under
her watchful eye. She has made sure each paper met journalistic
standards as well as school publications standards. More importantly,
she has helped young men and women become better writers and editors
while infusing them with the important role newspapers and good
journalism skills in today’s world as well as at Haverford High
School. She will leave the post in January.
Current editor-in-chief at the Fordian, Laura Cohen, has worked with
Mrs. Fish for all four years. Laura, now a senior, remembers feeling
very welcomed when she entered the publications office. Mrs. Fish was
more than welcoming; she was always encouraging Laura to write and
guided her toward a leadership position.
“She taught me to write in a different way and she taught me what it
takes to be an editor. Now I am a better writer and I am more
organized. I have learned to collaborate with others and to get things
done on time.”
Before presenting her with a certificate honoring her years of service,
Superintendent of Schools William Keilbaugh, said her name had been
synonymous with the Fordian since he could remember. “To me you
always seem to be calm, clear-headed and totally enjoying your time
with the Fordian staff,” Keilbaugh said. “We thank you for your
dedication and for the valuable life lessons you have taught so many of
our students over the years.” Mrs. Fish was recognized at the December
17th school board meeting. On that same night, staff members of the
Fordian received certificates lauding their recognition by the Columbia
Scholastic Press Association, the Fordian received a silver medal
certificate.
